South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party falls to 35% in new poll

A Gallup Korea poll found that 35% of South Koreans support the ruling Democratic Party, the lowest level since President Lee Jae-myung took office.

The main opposition People Power Party had 26% support, while 31% said they supported no party.

In the previous survey in the third week of September, the figures were 40%, 27% and 25%, respectively.

The poll surveyed 1,000 people aged 18 and older from October 6 to 8 by telephone interview.

Lee’s job approval rating was 37%, unchanged from the previous poll and also his lowest since taking office.

Democratic Party members say the party needs to examine why its support is not recovering, while the opposition has not gained support as the ruling party has weakened.

The party’s leader, Kim Min-seok, had pledged to raise its rating by 10 percentage points within 100 days of taking office.
