Heal Italia proposes national plan for precision medicine

Heal Italia has proposed a national strategy to bring precision medicine into Italy’s public health service.

Precision medicine uses information about a person’s health to guide prevention and treatment.

The white paper was presented in Italy’s Chamber of Deputies and also proposes a plan for seven southern regions: Sardinia, Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, Molise, Campania and Abruzzo.

The southern plan would link specialist centres with local hospitals and strengthen infrastructure, including through telemedicine and shared expertise.

Its aims include reducing patients’ need to travel for care, speeding up advanced diagnosis and improving standards in underserved areas.

The proposal calls for shared data systems and common standards to help coordinate care and support the use of new technologies across the country.

A roadmap for 2027 to 2030 would start with governance and standards, then launch a demonstration network, integrate care pathways into the public health service and extend models that prove effective.
