Stephen King says he prefers William Friedkin’s Sorcerer to the French original
Stephen King has said his favorite film is Sorcerer, a 1977 adventure thriller directed by William Friedkin.
It is based on the same story as The Wages of Fear, the 1953 French film directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot.
Both films draw on Georges Arnaud’s novel The Wages of Fear.
Sorcerer follows four men who try to escape their pasts by transporting nitroglycerin through the South American jungle.
The unstable cargo makes every rough stretch of the journey dangerous.
King said he disagrees with people who think Clouzot’s film is better, though he also named Clouzot’s The Diabolical Ones among his favorites.
Friedkin also called Sorcerer his favorite of his own films and said he would not change a shot.
The film suffered a major commercial setback when it was released, but the story gives no details about what may happen next.
Stephen King says his favorite film of all time is William Friedkin’s 1977 thriller Sorcerer.
He prefers it to Henri-Georges Clouzot’s French film The Wages of Fear, which tells the same story.
King shared the choice while presenting a film selection for the British Film Institute in September 2017.

Admirers of Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear
Some people may consider Clouzot’s film better, King says.
My favorite film of all time, this may surprise you, is Sorcerer, William Friedkin’s remake of The Wages of Fear by the great Henri-Georges Clouzot. Some may say Clouzot’s film is better: I disagree.
I love the film. Of all the films I’ve made, it’s my favorite. It’s the only film [...] where I wouldn’t change a single shot. And it’s the film that comes closest to my vision.
