WhatsApp adds parental controls for teen accounts

WhatsApp has introduced tools that let parents or guardians link their accounts to a teenager’s account and set limits on some app features.

Parents can manage who sees the teen’s profile photo or status posts and who can add them to groups, and receive alerts when the teen joins or leaves groups.

They cannot read the teen’s messages, which remain encrypted.

A psychologist says the tools can help address risks such as cyberbullying, pressure from peers and contact from adults with harmful intentions.

But she says electronic monitoring should support, not replace, open conversation and trust between parents and teenagers.

She recommends that families set up the controls together and clearly explain what parents can and cannot see.

The guidance highlights that digital safeguards work best alongside education about online risks and a supportive family relationship.
