Tomoka Nishiyama becomes first woman eligible for shogi's main pro ranks

Tomoka Nishiyama, 31, became the first woman eligible to join shogi's main professional ranks.

She qualified on Oct.

10 by winning her fifth Hakurei title, a major championship in women's professional shogi.

In Kanazawa, she beat Kana Fukuma 4-1 in their best-of-seven series.

Shogi is a traditional Japanese board game similar to chess.

The main professional ranks, known as kishi, are open to men and women, while women's players have a separate professional system.

A rule introduced last year lets a female professional qualify for the kishi ranks by winning the Hakurei title five times.

Nishiyama has not decided whether to use that opportunity and said she would consult others before making a decision.
