BOPE officer killed in exchange of fire with fellow police in Rio

Sub-lieutenant Gláucio Marcelo Fonseca da Silva, a 54-year-old officer in Rio de Janeiro’s BOPE special police unit, was killed on Sunday in Jacarepaguá.

The shooting happened after BOPE officers stopped a vehicle and officers from the 18th Battalion arrived at the scene.

The battalion’s command said poor light may have led the arriving officers to mistake the BOPE operation for a crime in progress.

Five other military police officers were injured, and all were taken to hospital.

Gláucio had served in the police force for 26 years and had three children.

His brother, Sergeant Heber Carvalho, was also a military police officer and died during a major operation in Rio in October 2025.

The Capital Homicide Division and the military police’s internal affairs unit are investigating how Gláucio died.
