Círio de Nazaré procession draws estimated 2 million people in Belém

The Círio de Nazaré is a religious celebration honoring Our Lady of Nazareth, held in Belém, in Brazil’s Pará state.

Its main procession took place on Sunday and has been held for more than 230 years.

The route covered about 4 kilometers, from Belém’s Metropolitan Cathedral to the Basilica Sanctuary of Nazaré.

Devotees pulled a flower-decorated carriage with a traditional rope, while some carried objects offered in thanks or prayer.

The event coordinator said estimates suggested about 2 million people attended, but the figure had not been officially confirmed.

He also said the procession went smoothly, with few incidents.

Seven more processions are planned over the next 15 days, with the celebrations due to end on October 26.

The tributes were fantastic, the people's walk was peaceful, we had very few incidents, everything happened as we asked God, and He granted it to us.
