Fire burns 513.89 hectares in Tanjung Puting National Park

A newly discovered wildfire has burned 513.89 hectares in Tanjung Puting National Park, in Central Kalimantan’s Kotawaringin Barat and Seruyan districts.

The burned area is mineral land, not peatland, according to Indonesia’s disaster agency chief.

Across six provinces, 639.23 hectares were still burning and being fought when officials gave their update.

Central and South Kalimantan were the main focus of the response.

Thick smoke and poor visibility have blocked aircraft operations in Central Kalimantan, so crews there are relying mainly on ground efforts.

Fires are also causing heavy smoke in Palembang, where residents report breathing and eye irritation, and have led to the rescue of 46 orangutans in West Kalimantan.

Officials said eight orangutans that had recovered were moved to a protected forest, while firefighting continues and additional aircraft are planned for operations in South Sumatra.

The largest fire is indeed in Central Kalimantan. The reason it is the largest is that a new fire has just been discovered in Tanjung Puting National Park, in Kotawaringin Barat and Seruyan regencies. As of today, 513.89 hectares have burned there. Although it is not peatland, it is mineral soil.
