Champion hurdler Losange Bleu dies during race at Auteuil

French hurdler Losange Bleu collapsed and died during the Prix Carmarthen at Auteuil racecourse in Paris on Sunday.

The seven-year-old was leading when he fell shortly after entering the final straight.

His jockey, Johnny Charron, was thrown from the horse and hit a track barrier, but was not injured.

A post-mortem examination has been ordered, and the cause of death is not yet known; possible explanations include a heart attack, a bone injury or internal organ failure.

Losange Bleu had won 16 of his 27 races and earned nearly 1.7 million Swiss francs, making him one of France’s leading racehorses.

His death has deeply affected his owners, trainer and racing team, while Kingland won the race after Losange Bleu’s fall.
