Historian says Netanyahu uses antisemitism claims to silence critics

Historian Jean-Pierre Filiu argues that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu uses the fight against antisemitism to discredit his critics.

Filiu says Netanyahu also uses it to defend alliances with Jewish supremacists and the European far right.

He traces Netanyahu’s confrontational political style to the 1995–96 election campaign, when Netanyahu opposed the peace process led by Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres.

Rabin was assassinated in November 1995 by a supporter of settlement in the West Bank.

Netanyahu won the election in May 1996, and Filiu says he continued attacking political opponents and public institutions during his years in power.

The columnist also says Netanyahu has preferred support from Christian Zionists in the United States, despite antisemitic remarks by some prominent figures in that movement.

Filiu argues that this approach risks alienating parts of the Jewish diaspora.
