IMF warns of risks from AI, rising bond yields and cyberattacks
The IMF warned that global markets face several near-term risks in its Global Financial Stability Report.
It said a sharp fall in AI-related investments could hurt the wider economy if expectations for profits or the technology's economic gains prove too high.
Rising government bond yields could make borrowing more expensive and put pressure on other financial assets, while high public debt adds to the strain.
Major cyberattacks could disrupt essential financial services, including payments, markets and access to bank deposits.
The IMF said heavy borrowing, limited liquidity and links between markets could amplify shocks and spread trouble across the financial system.
The IMF urged authorities to put public debt on a sustainable path and strengthen cyber defenses.
It also called for limits on excessive borrowing in the AI sector, including through derivatives and margin loans.
The International Monetary Fund warned that an AI market correction, rising government bond yields and cyberattacks could threaten financial stability.
The IMF said AI investment has helped offset economic pressures but warned that returns may fall short of expectations.
It said rising leverage in AI financing could deepen losses and spread disruption across markets.
The fund also warned that higher sovereign borrowing costs could pressure asset values and amplify strains in bond markets.
Cyber defenses are under pressure, with software providers often having little time to fix vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.
