Anthropic builds Scion to manage a surge in AI-generated code

Anthropic says its merged code changes rose from about 2,500 a day in May to more than 30,000 in September as Claude produced more code.

The increase strained the systems the company uses to store, review and test software.

Anthropic built Scion, a centralized source-control system, after several months of development and a five-month migration.

The system is designed for large codebases and AI agents, with many operations handled by a server rather than by local copies of a repository.

Anthropic says its main code branch is about 100 GB and its continuous-integration system runs roughly 25 million code checkouts each day.

The scale made Git-based workflows difficult for Anthropic, although the company says Git remains suitable for most code repositories.

Anthropic also developed tools for code review, search and access control alongside Scion.

We don’t expect this rate of growth to slow down anytime soon; the latent demand for merging code is practically infinite, and every bottleneck we remove immediately leads to a further increase in the amount of code we produce.

We perform on the order of 25 million code checkouts per day for CI, before counting developer environments, agent sandboxes, and research jobs
