Unions ask Spain to study earlier retirement for home-care workers
Spanish unions CCOO and UGT have asked the Social Security ministry to consider earlier retirement for people who provide care in clients’ homes.
Their request covers home-care workers, not staff in care homes.
The unions say the job involves heavy physical work, tight schedules, travel between homes and often working alone.
They also point to health risks and difficulties getting help or improving conditions inside private homes.
The unions want the government to consider reduction coefficients, which can make each year worked count for a longer period and allow earlier retirement.
The request starts a process that will examine factors including sick leave and workplace accidents, and could lead to those coefficients being granted.
The employers’ association has not joined the request.
