Chiikawa film returns to Japan’s weekend box-office top spot

The Chiikawa film returned to first place in Japan’s weekend cinema attendance rankings for October 9–11, after three weeks away from the top.

In its 12th week in cinemas, it drew 375,000 people and earned 563 million yen over the three-day weekend.

Its total box office passed 17.9 billion yen by October 12, with 12.29 million tickets sold.

The film is the first theatrical animated feature based on the Chiikawa characters and adapts a popular long story by creator Nagano.

A new Resident Evil film opened in second place, while the previous week’s leader fell to third.

The Chiikawa film had already been reported as the highest-grossing film released in Japan in 2026.

Some earlier audience giveaways will be offered again, though no date for the repeat distribution is given.
