Skiing resumes at Zermatt and Saas-Fee glacier resorts

Public skiing is set to resume on October 14 on the Theodul Glacier in Zermatt, Switzerland.

A heatwave and melting ice had made skiing there impossible since the end of July.

Recent snowfall and cooler temperatures have improved conditions, but not all pistes are open.

The Zermatt resort is preparing to open another lift, which could add a beginner area and a small snow park if conditions allow.

In Saas-Fee, some lifts on the Allalin Glacier are accessible again after summer operations were suspended because conditions were unsafe.

Staff are preparing pistes there with snow left over from last year, and the resort says operating them takes considerable effort.

Swiss glaciers lost 5.5 percent of their ice this summer, and Saas-Fee’s management says glacier skiing cannot continue indefinitely.
