Rupiah opens higher as US dollar weakens

The rupiah began trading higher against the US dollar in Indonesia on Monday, gaining 0.08% to 17,860 per dollar.

The dollar also weakened against a group of major currencies, giving the rupiah some support.

However, the dollar index remained above 102, a sign that the US currency was still relatively strong globally.

Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti said the central bank was ready to intervene more forcefully if global market pressure puts further strain on the rupiah.

She pointed to unresolved tensions in the Middle East, which could push up oil prices and strengthen the dollar.

Indonesia’s trade balance, meanwhile, recorded a surplus of US$3.3 billion, which Destry described as a sign that domestic conditions were more manageable.

Bank Indonesia said it would also monitor currencies in nearby countries, including the Philippine peso and Thai baht.
