Sánchez says Spain’s diversity and social rights unite the country
Spain marks its National Day on 12 October, a day that includes a military parade in Madrid attended by the King and Queen.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez used a video message to present Spain as a diverse country united by what people have built together.
He pointed to rights including education, health care, housing, free expression and the freedom to love whom people choose.
The video also showed examples of Spanish culture, public services, sport and social inclusion.
Sánchez delivered the message as the country heads toward an election scheduled for 29 November.
The National Day parade is often uncomfortable for him and his ministers, who are regularly booed there.
Pedro Sánchez said Spain’s diversity and social rights help unite the country in a message for the National Day of Spain on 12 October.
He said people do not need to think alike, and that what unites them is what they have built together.
Sánchez cited rights including freedom of opinion, education, healthcare, housing, and the freedom to be and love whom one chooses.
He called for recognition of rights already achieved and those still to come.
His message was recorded in the gardens of the La Moncloa palace, with the flags of Spain and the European Union behind him.
