Spain’s 2027 pension rules raise the age and contribution thresholds

Spain is due to change several pension rules from January 2027, affecting people nearing retirement and people already receiving pensions.

To retire at 65 under the ordinary system, workers will need at least 38 years and six months of contributions; otherwise, the ordinary retirement age will be 67.

The years used to calculate a pension will expand to 25 years and eight months, with the option to leave out the four months with the lowest contributions.

The Social Security system will compare that calculation with one based on the last 25 years and use whichever gives the higher pension.

Workers will need 37 years of contributions to receive 100% of their regulatory base, up from 36 years and six months in 2026.

Contributory pensions are due to rise in January in line with inflation, but the increase is not yet known; one estimate puts it above 3%.

A proposal to remove early-retirement penalties for people with more than 40 years of contributions has begun its passage through parliament, but it is not guaranteed to take effect.
