Harbaugh defends Giants’ overtime plan after Skattebo fumble
The New York Giants and Washington Commanders tied 27-27 in overtime on Sunday.
The Giants had the ball at Washington’s 24-yard line near the two-minute warning, and Washington had no timeouts left.
New York could have tried to run down the clock before attempting a field goal, but running back Cam Skattebo fumbled on the next play.
Coach John Harbaugh said the plan was to run the ball twice, gain as many yards as possible, then take a knee before kicking.
He called a 42-yard field goal very makeable but not certain, and said the extra yards could improve the chance of scoring.
The strategy was intended to leave Washington without time to answer if the kick missed.
Harbaugh said Skattebo and the team needed to learn from the play, and that they would likely use the same plan in a similar situation.

That’s a really, that’s kind of, strategically, the idea was to run it twice, and then run it down, get as close as we could, protect the football, which we talked about numerous times, and then run it down and take the knee
So in case he doesn’t make the field goal, there’s no time for them to come back and get the field goal.
That’s the strategy we decided on early in training camp, and that’s the strategy we’ll probably do next time, too.
