India’s chief justice declines meeting with Congress leaders over vote allegations
India’s Chief Justice, Surya Kant, declined a request to meet Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi.
The leaders wanted to discuss allegations of “vote chori” amid protests in Delhi calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
Kant said similar issues were already awaiting decisions in the Supreme Court.
He said a private meeting could conflict with the separation of powers, which is part of India’s constitutional structure.
The court, he said, has a judicial role and cannot act administratively on the matter.
He told the leaders they could file a petition, which could receive a priority hearing alongside similar cases.
Kharge said the Congress would continue its fight.
