James Gray Says Two Lovers Was His First Fully Personal Film
Director James Gray told an audience at the London Film Festival that Two Lovers was the first film in which he felt he had fully carried out his artistic vision.
The 2008 film was his fourth feature and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Gray said he had creative control and freedom on the film, which cost about $9.5 million to make.

Two Lovers follows Leonard, a photographer living with his parents after a heartbreak, as he becomes caught between two women.
