Lawyer Joan Piqué Vidal, who defended in Banca Catalana case, dies at 93

Joan Piqué Vidal, a lawyer from Barcelona, died on October 7 in Castelldefels, near Barcelona, aged 93.

His funeral was held there on Saturday.

He became prominent in the 1980s through his work in the Banca Catalana case, which involved former Catalan leader Jordi Pujol.

Pujol was never put on trial in that case.

Piqué Vidal later said he was not technically Pujol’s lawyer, but had defended other bank executives and advised Pujol not to have a lawyer or court representative at that stage.

In 2005, Piqué Vidal was sentenced to seven years in prison for extorting businesspeople alongside former judge Lluís Pascual Estevill.

The sentence concerned crimes committed in the early 1990s, including bribery, unlawful detention and threats.
