About 20 lakh Delhi voters who received SIR notices have been verified
Delhi election officials have verified about 20 lakh of the 33 lakh voters who received notices during a Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of the electoral roll.
The notices asked voters to clarify issues in their records or provide documents to confirm they could be included on the roll.
More than 19 lakh notices concerned record discrepancies, while nearly 14 lakh went to voters whose records could not be linked to a 2002 electoral roll.
Officials eased the process, allowing booth-level officers to visit homes and collect documents instead of requiring voters to attend hearings at government offices.
They can also correct minor errors, such as spelling mistakes, after checking documents.
The verification matters because a draft roll published on August 31 listed 97.5 lakh voters, after about 47.6 lakh names were deleted; the Election Commission said many of those people had moved and not submitted forms.
Verification and the handling of notices will continue until November 30, and the final SIR roll is scheduled for December 4.
