Supreme Court says it has not ruled on new Form 6 voter-registration form
India’s Supreme Court said it has not decided whether the new Form 6 voter-registration form is valid.
The form is used to include new voters in electoral rolls during a Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.
The court clarified that its earlier judgment on the SIR exercise in Bihar did not address the form, which did not exist when that judgment was issued.
The clarification followed a lawyer’s claim that an Election Commission press note suggested the court had upheld Form 6.
The judges said the form would be examined in other pending cases.
The Chief Justice also warned against treating isolated comments made aloud during a hearing as legal precedent.
