North Korea marks ruling party anniversary with modest celebration

North Korea marked the 81st anniversary of the founding of its ruling Workers’ Party with a performance in Pyongyang.

Leader Kim Jong-un attended the event, which featured songs, dance and acrobatics.

His wife, Ri Sol-ju, and daughter, Kim Ju-ae, were shown accompanying him.

The celebration was part of a series of anniversary events and was modest in scale.

North Korea has often held large military parades and other displays for anniversaries ending in zero or five, which it treats as milestones.

Last year’s anniversary included a large military parade that revealed a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

No statement from Kim marking this anniversary was reported, and no further plans were specified.
