Greens seek to block US execution livestream from being viewed in Australia
The Greens want the Australian government to block a planned livestream of a US execution from being viewed in Australia.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the public would be able to watch the firing-squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan on 3 December.
Hasan was identified as the Fort Hood shooter.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young wrote to the eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, and Communications Minister Anika Wells to seek assurances that the stream would not be shown.
She suggested digital platforms could face large fines if they showed it or failed to take steps to block it later.
Hanson-Young said she considered the stream shocking and barbaric, and that Australians did not want it on their screens.
