Tesla pauses Canadian Model 3 Premium orders, citing import quota

Tesla has stopped taking orders for the Model 3 Premium in Canada, including its Shanghai-built versions.

The company says high demand used up its import quota and that orders are expected to resume in March 2027.

The pause leaves only the Model 3 Performance available to order in Canada.

Government figures show 33,069 of 49,000 permits remain unused in the current quota year for Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Canada lowered its tariff on those vehicles from 100% to 6.1% in January and set the annual limit at 49,000.

The gap between Tesla’s explanation and the national figures remains unclear; the government says it may reserve quota to ensure fair access for eligible companies.

Tesla’s lower-priced Model 3 Premium had brought the starting price of the sedan down to $39,490 CAD.

Orders are expected to resume when a new quota year begins in March 2027, according to Tesla.
