13-year-old detained after shooting classmate in Chapecó, Brazil

A court in Chapecó, in western Santa Catarina state, Brazil, ordered a 13-year-old into provisional detention after he allegedly shot another 13-year-old on Saturday.

Prosecutors say he used a 9mm pistol belonging to his father.

The injured teenager was taken to hospital and had surgery, but officials have not given an update on his condition.

The detention can last up to 45 days while the case is investigated.

Prosecutors have provisionally treated the incident as an act equivalent to attempted qualified homicide, citing the use of a restricted firearm and the victim’s age.

Police seized several firearms, magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition at the family home, and the father is also being investigated over the storage of the weapons.

The court ordered continued medical and psychological support for the detained teenager, services for the adults responsible for him, and further investigative and forensic work.
