Germany says it will keep sanctions on Russian oil after US diesel deal

The United States has agreed to buy hundreds of thousands of tonnes of diesel from Russia after a conversation between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The US plans to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel to allow the deliveries, and the Kremlin confirmed the deal.

Germany says it will keep its sanctions against Russia and continue working with European partners on further measures.

The EU has sanctioned Russian oil and oil products since 2023, and Germany says it has imported none from Russia since then.

The government says Germany’s fuel supply is diversified and does not depend on Russian oil.

A German energy industry group expects the US deal to have little effect on global markets or prices at German petrol stations, and price data had shown no major change by Saturday midday.

Germany says it will continue supporting Ukraine and diplomatic efforts toward a peace settlement.

Германия’s decision on sanctions remains unchanged despite the US agreement.
