Canadian composer Sarah Davachi wins Silver Lion at Venice Biennale

Canadian composer and organist Sarah Davachi has won the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy.

The award recognizes her body of work, rather than one specific composition, album or performance.

Davachi, 39, was born and raised in Calgary and now lives in Los Angeles.

Her music combines electronic and acoustic sounds, including analogue instruments and pipe organ, in long compositions with gradual shifts in tone and texture.

The Biennale judges described her as an important voice in contemporary music and said her work brings together minimalism, early music and experimental studio practices.

The Silver Lion is one of the Biennale’s top awards, and only a few Canadians have won it.

Davachi is due to perform at two concerts in Venice over the next week and in Montreal next month.
