Tribal Guarachero’s Pointy Boots Move Into Mainstream Fashion

Pointy, upturned boots associated with tribal guarachero are showing up beyond the dance floors where the style began.

Tribal guarachero is a Mexican electronic music genre that became a youth movement in Monterrey, where people made often exaggerated boots by hand.

Rosalía wore a pair in an Instagram photo, and Caín Culto wore similar boots on his debut album cover.

The style had already reached a wider audience through 3BallMTY, whose song “Inténtalo” topped Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart in 2012.

Now the music is gaining attention again, with events and releases taking tribal guarachero to new cities and blending it with other styles.

A Paris party launched in September, and Mexico City label N.A.A.F.I released a compilation combining tribal with reggaetón, techno and cumbiatón.

The latest revival links a local youth culture and its music to a growing global club scene.
