RBI researchers estimate missing state inflation data from pandemic months
Pandemic restrictions stopped price collection in April and May 2020, leaving gaps in state-level inflation data.
RBI researchers used household surveys and past inflation figures to estimate inflation for those months and the same months in 2021.
When combined, their estimates were close to the official national figures.
The method could help fill data gaps, but survey answers may not fully reflect prices across each state.
