Gaza professionals keep working from tents after offices are destroyed

Professionals in Gaza are using tents as offices, clinics and shops after many workplaces were destroyed.

Dr Mohammed al-Khalidi, a prosthetics and orthotics specialist, now treats patients in a tent in al-Mawasi, in southern Gaza.

Israeli bombing destroyed three of his clinics in Rafah and Khan Younis, so he salvaged equipment and continued working from a temporary space.

His tent has limited room, unreliable electricity, intense heat and loud noise.

He says continuing care matters because patients need prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices and follow-up treatment, and 5,000 to 6,000 people in Gaza underwent amputations between October 2023 and October 2025.

More than four in five buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed since the war began in October 2023, while high rents make replacement office space unaffordable for many professionals.

Tent-based work has spread since displacement began in late 2023, and more such businesses appeared after a ceasefire was announced in October 2025.

What people are saying

Working from a temporary space is nothing like working in a fully equipped clinic, but for me, it is better than stopping the service altogether.

My move to a tent was not a professional choice. It was a direct result of the destruction of the place where I used to work, compounded by the rental crisis, which made finding an alternative office extremely difficult.
