Former Nintendo staff say Elon Musk's Wario sketch upset the company

Elon Musk played Nintendo character Wario in a 2021 Saturday Night Live sketch set in a courtroom.

The sketch portrayed Wario as accused of killing Mario and included jokes about Nintendo characters.

Former Nintendo PR managers Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang say the sketch was not well received inside the company.

They were working at Nintendo when it aired and recalled that it felt out of place because there was no new Wario game or product at the time.

They also said parts of the sketch crossed into uncomfortable territory, with sexual jokes involving Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach.

Nintendo is known for family-friendly characters, so the portrayal was a poor fit for the company.

The former employees compared it with a newer SNL sketch about Zelda and GTA 6, which they thought likely went over better with Nintendo.
