German AI start-up Parloa shows both promise and funding barriers

Berlin-based start-up Parloa developed the artificial intelligence system used by Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s hotline.

The system is designed to understand callers and handle airport-specific tasks, not just give general answers.

Parloa is valued at more than $3 billion and has nearly 600 employees.

Its founder, Stefan Ostwald, says Germany and Europe have more start-ups and early funding than when Parloa began in 2018.

But companies often struggle to find the much larger sums needed to expand their businesses.

Ostwald says there are relatively few suitable investors in Germany, so companies may need international funding.

Parloa is expanding and has joined an initiative that aims to support Germany’s business environment.
