Germany will overhaul 13 major rail routes by 2031, down from 21
Germany’s national railway, Deutsche Bahn, and the transport ministry have reduced the number of major rail routes due for full renovation by 2031 from 21 to 13.
The work is part of a plan to repair busy corridors so they become less prone to disruption and can support more reliable services.
Eight routes, including Stuttgart–Ulm, Bremen–Hamburg and Würzburg–Nuremberg, have been postponed, with no new dates set.
The railway and ministry say the projects have not been cancelled, and they will decide next year which routes to prioritise from 2032.
The revised schedule is intended to make construction more manageable given limited capacity on the rail network and among construction firms.
The railway also plans better preparation for diversion routes and to reopen services in stages after work is complete.
It says digital train-control technology will become a standard part of future renovations, with the system installed from the early 2030s.
The changes follow problems during previous renovations, including delays and cancellations after work on some routes was completed.
Deutsche Bahn and Germany’s transport ministry plan to comprehensively upgrade 13 major rail routes by 2031, down from 21.
The eight other planned upgrades have been postponed, and their new dates have not been set.
The railway and ministry said the projects are delayed, not cancelled, and they will decide next year which routes to prioritise from 2032.
The revised plan is intended to account for limited capacity in the rail network and construction industry and to make works more reliable.
It also calls for better-prepared diversions, a gradual return to service after construction and wider use of digital signalling technology.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
In the past, implementation too often did not deliver the desired results.
We want to carry out the upgrades more efficiently and, above all, keep the burden on our customers during construction as low as possible.
No corridor upgrades are being cancelled, only postponed.
The comprehensive-upgrade concept was presented under then transport minister Volker Wissing and then railway chief Richard Lutz.
The plan was revised, limiting the number of upgrades each year to four or five and extending the overall schedule to 2036.
Deutsche Bahn and the transport ministry announced that 13 routes, rather than 21, would be comprehensively upgraded by 2031.
The authorities plan to decide which corridor upgrades to prioritise from 2032.
