Five groups are competing for roles in a possible Flávio Bolsonaro government

Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s first round and advanced to a runoff.

He has not won the election, but at least five groups are already competing for influence in a government he might lead.

They include economic figures linked to former minister Paulo Guedes and São Paulo’s financial sector, as well as politicians from centrist parties and agribusiness.

Other groups include Bolsonaro’s family allies, people connected to São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, and figures without a public history of working with him politically.

Several former officials and business figures have been discussed for possible cabinet jobs, including in the economy, agriculture and the chief of staff’s office.

The contest matters because these groups could shape the priorities and appointments of a future government.

Lula’s campaign has criticized the discussions as premature, and the next step is the runoff election.
