Edo youths publicly renounce cult membership at state event
Several young people in Edo State, Nigeria, publicly renounced their membership of cult groups at a state-organised event.
The event was part of the government’s efforts to tackle cultism and other violent crime.
Governor Monday Okpebholo praised those who renounced and warned that people who remain involved could face the full weight of the law.
He said the government would offer rehabilitation and help former members return to society and lawful work.
He also warned that buildings used for cult-related activities could be demolished.
Okpebholo said cult-related killings had fallen from more than 300 a year before he took office in 2024 to almost zero, but he did not provide figures to support that claim.
