Psychologist suggests a boundary-setting response to gaslighting

Dr Lisa Marie Bobby, a licensed psychologist and founder of Growing Self Counseling & Coaching, recommends a short response for people dealing with gaslighting.

Gaslighting is a form of emotional manipulation that can make someone doubt their memory or judgment.

Bobby’s suggested words are: “You may have a different perspective, but please do not invalidate mine.”

The response allows for disagreement while making clear that one person’s view should not erase the other’s.

It also shifts the focus from proving exactly what happened to setting a boundary about how the conversation is handled.

If the other person still leaves no room for their point of view, Bobby suggests saying they are not willing to continue the conversation.
