Nine-year-old girl missing after falling into open drain in Ahmedabad

A nine-year-old girl fell into an open drain on Narol-Pirana Road in Ahmedabad, in the Indian state of Gujarat.

The fall happened on Saturday after her mother got out of a rickshaw and stopped to pay the fare.

Police and fire brigade teams began searching, but had not found the girl after about seven hours.

Teams searched the area and checked a pumping station without finding clues.

Fire officials said Border Security Force personnel would enter the drain to assess the water depth and conditions.

If the water current allows, rescuers plan to open sewer manhole covers and inspect the route towards the pumping station.

Officials said the search would continue until the girl is found.
