Missouri football referee suspended after grabbing player during celebration

A Missouri high school football referee was suspended after video showed him grabbing a player during a touchdown celebration.

The incident happened Thursday during a game between Glendale and Kickapoo.

Glendale receiver Joelle Rover had just scored on a 43-yard catch when referee Kevin Elmer grabbed his jersey and redirected him.

The state high school activities association placed Elmer on indefinite leave.

Glendale coach Frank Tristan said the contact had tarnished the game and objected to the referee touching his player.

Glendale had received two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties earlier in the game, which Glendale won 35-6.

The association’s suspension is in place, but no further action is described.
