South Korean lawmakers question plan to merge four port authorities
South Korean lawmakers debated a government plan to merge the port authorities of Busan, Ulsan, Incheon and Yeosu-Gwangyang.
The discussion took place during a parliamentary audit at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in Busan.
Lawmakers from both major parties warned that merging the authorities could weaken regional control and concentrate maritime power in Busan.
One lawmaker also said the government had not publicly shared a merger plan or timetable.

The debate matters because the four authorities currently operate independently, and lawmakers questioned whether a merger would serve their regions.
