Mark Charnock marks 30 years playing Marlon on Emmerdale

Mark Charnock is marking 30 years playing Marlon Dingle on the British TV soap Emmerdale.

Marlon first arrived in the village in October 1996 to stay with his uncle, Zak Dingle.

Since then, the character has been married five times, had two children and faced major hardships, including a serious stroke.

Charnock says Marlon’s softhearted nature is central to why viewers continue to care about him.

He also says the character’s empathy has grown through the tragedies he has experienced.

Charnock contrasted Marlon with the “alpha male” public figures he says are common today, arguing that people can feel affection for more gentle men.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
