Dance production draws on Tyagaraja’s “Endaro Mahanubhavulu”

Anita Guha’s dance production “Endaro Mahanubhavulu” takes its name from a composition by the saint-composer Tyagaraja.

The production pays tribute to his devotion to Rama and his spirit of surrender.

Guha choreographed it, scholar Dushyanth Sridhar conceived and scripted it, and Rajkumar Bharathi composed the musical score.

Its seven segments bring together stories and works linked to religious figures and poets, including Adi Shankaracharya, Andal, Meerabai and Sant Tukaram.

Bharatanatyam is at its core, with elements from other dance traditions used to shape some episodes.

A company of 53 dancers, alongside costumes, lighting and projected visuals, presents themes of devotion and dharma.

The production builds to a climax with devotees singing abhangs and chanting “Panduranga Vittala”.
