Two galleries will pair works by Leonora Carrington and Cecilia Vicuña
Lehmann Maupin and Gallery Wendi Norris are organizing a two-part exhibition of works by Leonora Carrington and Cecilia Vicuña.
The first part opens at Lehmann Maupin in New York on November 19, and the second opens at Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco in January.
Carrington was a Surrealist artist, while Vicuña is an artist and poet.
They met in Mexico City in 1969, when Carrington gave Vicuña advice that helped her turn a vision into a painting.
The exhibition will pair historical works by Carrington with new and earlier works by Vicuña.
The two locations will show different selections, with some works appearing in both parts.
The pairing is intended to help viewers consider Carrington’s influence on Vicuña and how the artists’ work relates.

What people are saying
Things sometimes take time until they sit in the right place
I love putting Leonora Carrington’s work in new context
I’m constantly trying to imagine how she would respond to things that we do, like this exhibition.
What has struck me most in speaking to Cecilia over the years was the influence that Carrington brought to her practice.
