Alberta separatists challenge Smith’s pledge to rule out another referendum
Albertans will vote on Oct.
19 on whether to remain in Canada or begin the process for a second, binding referendum on separation.
Premier Danielle Smith has said she would not hold another separation referendum if the remain option wins, at least while she is premier.
Some prominent separatists say that stance conflicts with the idea that voters should be able to decide the issue directly.
Cory Morgan, who leads the group Pathway to Independence, said another vote could be appropriate if Albertans wanted one in the future.
Alberta Prosperity Project CEO Mitch Sylvestre also questioned how Smith’s position might affect her politically.
A poll cited in the story found that 53 per cent of respondents who would vote for the United Conservative Party would also support the separation option in the upcoming referendum.
UCP members may have a chance to express their views at the party’s annual meeting next month.
