South Korean stocks fall sharply, with KOSPI near 6,100

South Korea’s main stock index, the KOSPI, fell 4.43% in early trading on October 13, to 6,101.25, close to the 6,100 level.

The KOSDAQ, another major South Korean market, dropped 3.56%.

Foreign investors were net sellers in both markets, while individual and institutional investors bought more shares than they sold on the KOSPI.

Shares of major companies fell, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which declined 4.79% and 5.17%.

Semiconductor stocks had also weakened in the United States overnight after China’s CXMT said it had advanced its DRAM technology and was reported to plan a new server product this year.

The news raised concern about stronger competition in the DRAM market.
