Respiratory illness hospitalizations are concentrated in Rio’s West Zone and Baixada
A study released in October says industrial pollution puts residents of Rio’s West Zone and Baixada Fluminense at health risk.
It links the exposure to steel, petrochemical and logistics hubs in the areas.
In 2025, Rio state recorded 43,724 public health system hospitalizations for pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory diseases.
Sixty percent of those hospitalizations were in the West Zone and Duque de Caxias, including neighborhoods such as Santa Cruz.
The study also found gaps in primary care: 52% of Queimados residents lack coverage, as do 43% in Duque de Caxias and Nova Iguaçu.
Limited primary care can weaken prevention and early treatment, adding pressure to hospital emergency rooms.
The findings are part of a wider study of inequality across 22 municipalities in metropolitan Rio, which also describes disparities in sanitation, green space, heat exposure and health.
Rio de Janeiro state recorded 43,724 public hospital admissions for respiratory diseases in 2025.
About 60% of those admissions were in West Zone neighborhoods, including Santa Cruz, and the municipality of Duque de Caxias.
The figures appear in the 2026 Inequality Map, released by the organization Casa Fluminense in October.
The report says residents in the West Zone and Baixada Fluminense face high pollution linked to steel, petrochemical and logistics hubs.
It also reports gaps in primary care in Baixada municipalities, which can hinder prevention and early treatment.

What people are saying
We are still in 2026 talking about people who are being killed, mostly young Black people, by state agents, or who are dying from other causes: becoming ill because they do not have access to sewage, because they live in a region where the air is extremely polluted.
