Tamil Nadu reaches HIV treatment and diagnosis targets

Tamil Nadu says it reached the National AIDS Control Programme’s 95-95-95 targets in September 2026.

These targets mean that 95% of people living with HIV know their status, 95% of those diagnosed receive treatment, and 95% of those treated have a suppressed level of the virus.

Health Minister K.G. Arunraj said 163,151 people were receiving treatment in the state.

HIV prevalence in Tamil Nadu fell from 0.40% in 2010 to 0.19% in 2023, according to the minister.

The state provides testing and treatment through government and private health facilities, and works with NGOs to reach groups at higher risk.

It also aims to prevent HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B from passing from mothers to babies, and has increased monthly financial support for children affected by HIV, with the higher payments due to begin in November.

The state says its wider goal is to achieve an HIV/AIDS-free Tamil Nadu by 2030.
