North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles Toward the Sea of Japan

North Korea launched ballistic missiles from its east coast toward the sea known as the East Sea or the Sea of Japan.

South Korea said it detected several missiles, some of which travelled more than 900 kilometres, while the US military said it identified two.

Japan also confirmed at least one suspected North Korean missile launch.

North Korea said the launches tested tactical ballistic missiles and technical improvements.

Tensions have risen after land-mine explosions near the heavily guarded border injured three South Korean soldiers, and both Koreas have recently tested new weapons.

The two sides remain technically at war because the 1953 conflict ended with a ceasefire, not a peace treaty.

South Korea said it had increased surveillance and remained alert for further launches.
